Writer's Block: Smoke screen

What are your feelings towards smoking? What rights do you think smokers and non-smokers should have?

personally, I'm not a fan of smoking at all. smoking is highly addictive, it kills, and it smells terrible when people smoke around you. part of my negative feelings toward smoking comes from the fact that my Grandfather actually died from lung cancer caused by his unhealthy addiction, leaving my Grandmother with cancer herself. fortunately she was able to pull through, but the impact my Grandfather's death had on me was great enough to solidify a dislike towards smoking. because smoking took away the opportunity for me to get to know my Grandpa, to have him live to see me graduate or get married or anything like that. and on top of all that was the drugs and alcohol lesson I got in Elementry School that reinforced my weariness of ever smoking myself.

now I don't mind that people smoke. if they decide to smoke then that is their decision. I have a couple of friends who smoke actually, and they're great people. but when it comes to actually smoking, I find it very, extremely rude to smoke at public places like a bus stop or right in front of a building, since many people go by those areas and all those people are going to have to breathe in that smoke and the results of second-hand smoking are not pretty at all. non-smokers have just as much of a right to breathe in clean air as smokers have to smoke. so I feel that as long as smokers can take their smoking habit around the corner, or at least a good 10-20 feet away from a public entrance or a bus stop(I keep bringing up bus stops because time and time again one of the most common places I find myself confronted with smokers who really don't give a damn about the people around them are at bus stops), then things would be fine with me. and someone could smoke themselves to death and be happy about it while leaving the non-smokers without having to worry as much about second-hand smoke.
